Ernest’s market opinion (19 May 17)

Dear all Below is my personal opinion on the market. As previously mentioned to my clients, I aim to reduce my percentage invested in stocks (currently around 130% invested), especially the non-performing stocks, with no immediate near term catalysts. I am cautious on the market in the next 1-2 months because a) The large market run up year to date. STI has appreciated approximately 12% YTD and 22% for the past one year; b) June is likely to be a quiet month as most companies have reported results and some of the blue chips have already ex dividend. i.e. limited […]

DBS – hits 52-week high, all-time overbought since 1991! (1 Dec 16)

DBS hit another 52-week high today. It has surged 19% from an intraday low of $14.97 on 9 Nov 2016 to $17.82 on 1 Dec 2016. This has significantly outperformed the STI by a mile, as STI was only higher by 6.0% over the same period.   What has caused the sharp rally in DBS? Some of the possible reasons may be 1. Since Donald Trump’s victory, the market has repriced in faster inflation in the U.S. due to Mr Trump’s infrastructure pledge. This has caused a surge in US Dollar and bond yields, especially on longer-dated debt. This bodes […]

Ernest’s market outlook (11 Nov 16)

Dear readers, Notwithstanding most experts’ dire predictions that Dow may plunge as much as 10% on Trump’s win, Dow closed at a record high AFTER Trump’s win! Read on for more.   S&P500 Index Just to recap what I have mentioned on 28 Oct 2016 (see HERE), I wrote “S&P500 closed below 100D EMA (currently 2,136) yesterday. As mentioned previously, S&P500 has not closed below its 100D EMA for three consecutive trading days since 1 Mar 2016. Thus, the price action around its 100D EMA is worth watching. After forming a death cross, 21D EMA is moving apart from 50D […]

STI dives 130 pts in 1 week! Time to buy in? (16 Jun 16)

STI has tumbled 130 points, or 4.5% from an intraday high of 2,882 on 9 Jun 2016 to close 2,752 on 16 Jun 2016. The recent rapid sell off seems to reveal some interesting opportunities especially for those readers who have taken profit and moved to mostly cash (similar to me) since last week. Like most people, I am not clairvoyant and am not always able to catch the lowest level to buy into stocks.   Also, I will not know for sure whether: 1. Brexit will occur; 2. What is the exact impact (short term, medium term, long term […]

Brexit – which are the companies most exposed to UK? (15 Jun 16)

Dear all At the time of writing this article, STI has tumbled 121 points, or 4.2% from an intraday high of 2,882 on 9 Jun 2016 to trade at 2,761 on 15 Jun 2016. With Brexit’s concerns hanging over the equity markets like a sword of Damocles, I believe it is apt to review which are the companies with significant exposure to UK. According to a UOB Kayhian report dated today, Ascott Reit, City Development, CDL Hospitality, Comfort Delgro, Fraser Hospitality Trust, Ho Bee and SembCorp Industries were cited as companies with significant exposure to UK. (See Table 1 below) […]
