Alibaba trades at single digit forward PE; net cash with earnings growth. What gives?! (11 Oct 23)

Dear all Alibaba, since hitting a post-result intraday high of HKD97.95 on 11 Aug, it has slumped 14.9% to close HKD83.40 on 10 Oct. At HKD83.40, Alibaba trades at 9.3x FY24F and 8.5x FY25F PE. Its financial year ends in Mar. On 26 Sep, Alibaba submitted a spin-off proposal for its Cainiao (click HERE) to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange has confirmed that the Company may proceed with the Proposed Spin-off. A spin-off listing application has been submitted to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. All in, it looks pretty positive. Why is Alibaba trading […]

Comfort Delgro closed at $1.03, lowest last seen on 18 Mar 2004! (9 Jun 23)

Dear all Comfort Delgro (“CD”) closed at $1.03 today. Based on Bloomberg, this was the lowest close last seen on 18 Mar 2004. The main reason cited for this recent drop was that Citi has reduced its target price for CD from $1.63 (26 Feb 2023) to $1.32 (2 Jun 2023). Nevertheless, they maintained their buy call. Is it all doom and gloom? Should we throw in the towel and just give up on CD? Personally, I find CD interesting at current levels. Before I delve into it, just for record purpose, I have a previous article on CD published […]

Comfort Delgro sinks to 14-year low! Will it go lower? (19 Jan 2023)

Dear all On 11 Jan, Comfort (CD) closed at $1.21, the lowest close since 31 Oct 2008. The next day, to the horror of CD’s shareholders, it broke $1.21 with volume expansion and closed at $1.18. At the time of this write-up, CD closed today at $1.14, the lowest close last seen 29 Oct 2008. Will CD fall more? Or will this be a comfortable trade at current level? Let’s read on for more.   Possible reasons to be bullish A) Still a recovery play CD with its operations in Australia, China, Singapore, UK etc. should gradually benefit as economies […]

3 stocks, Comfort Delgro, Thai Bev and Wilmar trade at attractive valuations (11 Oct 22)

Dear all Yesterday, Comfort Delgro, Thai Bev and Wilmar closed at $1.25; $0.565 and $3.64 respectively. Personally, they look interesting on several aspects. At $1.25, Comfort Delgro trades at levels last seen in 2011 and 2009! At $0.565, Thai Bev sits on a long term uptrend line established since 2009! At $3.64, Wilmar trades at approximately 2.2x and 3.0x standard deviations below its 10Y average PE and P/BV of around 13.8x and 1.1x respectively! Read on for more.   *Comfort Delgro* I have previously published a write-up on Comfort Delgro. Readers can refer to my write-up HERE for more information […]

Comfort Delgro drops back to pandemic lows! What gives? (30 Sep 22)

On 1 Sep, it was announced that Comfort Delgro (“CD”) will drop out of STI after being first included in the STI on 28 Jul 2010. Subsequently, there was turmoil in United Kingdom (“UK”) gilts and currency as UK government led by Prime Minister Liz Truss unveiled a (surprisingly) GBP45b plan to reduce taxes (click HERE for more information). Although CD may see some near-term price weakness, at Friday’s close of $1.32 (CD touched an intraday low $1.29 at the point of writing this), I personally believe most of the negatives may have already been priced in. Why am I […]

Riverstone – Is the recent 32% decline justified? (12 Sep 2020)

Riverstone recently caught my attention. It has tumbled approximately 32% from an intraday high of $4.90 on 7 Aug 2020 to close $3.33 on 11 Sep 2020. One client even thought that Riverstone has already undergone a bonus issue! The recent weakness is likely attributed to its co-founder selling 15.5m shares at $3.95 (Bloomberg cites a 90-day lockup on seller); the possibility of a vaccine resulting in demand for gloves and consequently their average selling price (“ASP”) falling off the cliff and some Malaysia investors selling shares to raise cash, as their moratorium on loan repayment ends (click HERE for […]

Yangzijiang – may be ripe for a bounce (12 Nov 2019)

This week, besides Food Empire which caught my attention (click HERE), Yangzijiang (“YZJ”) also caught my attention for being a laggard. It has given up all the gains since its large 7% jump on 5 Nov 2019. Notwithstanding the recent mild profit taking, it seems to be holding up well above its uptrend line. Given that its results are just around the corner, it may be an opportune time to take a look at YZJ. Do take a look at the basis, and more importantly, the risks.   Basis A) Chart analysis – a breakout / breakdown seems to be […]

Food Empire – potential bullish chart development amid volume expansion (11 Nov 2019)

This week, Food Empire caught my attention with their potential bullish chart developments amid volume expansion. This may be an opportune time to take a look at Food Empire on the back of its potential bullish chart and strong results released this evening. Do take a look at the basis and more importantly, the risks.   Basis A) Chart looks positive with strengthening indicators and volume Based on Chart 1 below, Food Empire has been trading in six-month trading range $0.490 – 0.550 and is now on the verge of challenging its key resistance around $0.550 with increasing volume. It […]

Investment Strategy 2

After you understand your investment strategy and your risk profile, the next step to do is to plan your asset and currency allocation. Assume that your investment style is moderate, you are in mid twenties and you do not have immediate requirement for your cash, you can invest in a balanced portfolio. You can consider the following allocation: 50% in cash, 30% in equities and 20% in alternatives (ie commodities etc. They are considered alternatives as they typically have a negative correlation with equities.) Even if equities drop 30% and alternatives drop 30%, the overall impact to your portfolio will […]
