Boustead Singapore – chart poised for a bullish breakout! (23 Jun 23)

Dear all With reference to my write-up on Comfort Delgro dated 9 Jun 2023 (click HERE) where I pointed out that I am comfortable to accumulate Comfort Delgro for a trading play, Comfort Delgro closed at $1.03 on 9 Jun, the lowest close last since on 18 Mar 2004. Since my writeup, Comfort Delgro has fortunately appreciated nine out of ten trading days to close almost 15% higher at $1.18 today. This compares favourably with STI which moved up 0.2% over the same period. Another stock, Boustead Singapore has recently caught my attention due to its chart development. It closed […]

Raffles Medical – Potential trading play as its results are just around the corner (20 Feb 23)

Dear all, Raffles Medical caught my attention recently as CLSA raised its target price from $1.70 to $1.92 on 8 Feb 23. $1.92 is a street high target with most analysts’ target price ranging between $1.58 – 1.65. Raffles Medical closed down 1 cent to $1.45 last Fri. Based on my personal view and observation, generally speaking, analysts seldom issue updated call so near to the company’s results release date. I mean there is usually no such urgency to do so, unless they have a significant change in view on the company. For those analysts who do, their calls are […]

Numerous trading opportunities as Singapore corporates report results (9 Aug 2022)

Dear all, Happy National Day! How has your portfolio been year to date? With reference to my writeup published on 3 Jul 2022 (click HERE), I mentioned that there are likely to be opportunities in the next few weeks. Post my writeup, S&P500 touched an intraday low of 3,722 on 14 Jul before closing up 418 points or 11.2% at 4,140 yesterday. In fact, S&P500 posted its best monthly gain in July, since Nov 2020. STI touched an intraday low of 3,088 on 15 Jul before trading up 183 points or 5.9% at 3,271 yesterday. Our Singapore banks started to […]

S&P500 closed at record high! What should we do? Buy or sell? (9 Aug 2021)

Dear all S&P500 has clocked its sixth consecutive month of gains in July 2021. This is the longest stretch since 2018. Furthermore, S&P500 has touched a record high to close at 4,437 on 6 Aug 2021. In the next 3 months, are markets poised for higher highs? Or should we be prudent and take some profit off the table first? Let’s take a look.   Ernest’s personal market observations a) Lack of catalysts to push the market higher Since Covid last year, markets, especially U.S. markets, have been able to push higher due partly to the combination of ultra-easy monetary policies; […]

Koda – Clear beneficiary of the surge in home furnishing spending trend (1 Jun 21)

Since 20 Aug 2020, Avarga has more than doubled from $0.146 to close $0.305 on 1 Jun 2021. Avarga’s strength is likely attributed to its 69.7% stake in Taiga (Taiga is Canada’s largest wholesale distributor of building materials, such as lumber, panels, doors, engineered wood, roofing and others). Taiga’s business has been flourishing due to the strength in home furnishings and the housing market in Canada and US. By extension, Koda may be another proxy to benefit from the surge in home furnishing spending trend. It is noteworthy that Koda is an Original Design Manufacturer / Original Equipment Manufacturer to […]

Recent weakness provides accumulation opportunities (9 Sep 20)

Dear all Based on Table 1 below, U.S. indices have fallen between 5.5% – 10% from the close of 2 Sep to 8 Sep. Nasdaq led the decline with a 10% drop. These are interesting times indeed! Why do I say so? Read on below. Table 1: Performance of various indices from 2 Sep to *8 Sep 20 Source: Ernest’s compilations (*STI and Hang Seng are based on 9 Sep closing prices) In my personal opinion, this recent U.S. market weakness provides accumulation opportunities for the well prepared and for those who have been waiting on the side-lines to accumulate […]

S&P500 has rebounded 31% from 23 Mar 20! Time to buy, hold or sell (19 Apr 20)?

S&P500 has staged a whopping 683 points, or 31% rebound from its intraday low of 2,192 to close 2,875 on 17 Apr 20. Many clients have asked me (almost daily) whether we have already seen the bottom and is this a good time to buy stocks etc. At 2,875, S&P500 is just 15% away from its record intraday high of 3,394 on 19 Feb 2020. The rally in Wall Street is at a stark contrast to grim news from Main Street in terms of job losses; significant number of deaths from Covid 19; lockdowns and poor corporate results. Both bull […]

Singpost – grossly oversold; closes at prices last seen in May 2009! (2 Mar 2020)

Dear all, It has been an extremely busy and hectic period with the U.S. indices clocking in their largest record weekly percentage drop last week. This week, Singpost caught my attention. Singpost has fallen 17.4% from its intraday high of $0.950 on 3 Jan 2020 to close at $0.785 today which is the lowest close since 5 May 2009. RSI closes at a grossly oversold level 10.7, almost at an all-time low last seen in June 2003. Why does it attract my attention? Read on for more.   Chart – Seems to indicate selling pressures may ease in the near […]

China Aviation – chart looks bullish amid analyst buy calls; below average valuations, supported with 3.6% dividend yield (3 Jan 2020)

Dear readers, Happy New Year! Hope your new year has been great. Market has been extremely interesting for the past couple of months. Recently, China Aviation (“CAO”) caught my attention with its bullish chart and looks interesting on a risk to reward aspect. CAO closed at $1.30 last Fri. Day range was $1.29-1.32. Read on for more.   Why did CAO catch my attention? a) Average analyst target price $1.70 With reference to Figure 1 below, average analyst target is around $1.70. Together with an estimated dividend yield of around 3.6%, CAO offers a total potential return of around 34%. […]

Hi-P – bearish engulfing candle forms after rising for 12 out of 15 days (29 Oct 2019)

This week, Hi-P has caught my attention with its 33% surge from the intra-day low of $1.13 on 7 Oct 2019 to trade to an intra-day high of $1.50 on 29 Oct 2019. In addition, it has risen 12 out the past 15 trading days with RSI touching a recent high of 81.8 on 25 Oct 2019. Based on Hi-P’s chart, it seems to present a favourable risk to reward short trade. Please see the basis and more importantly, the risks.   Basis a) Hi-P trades above the higher analyst target price $1.32 Average analyst target price for Hi-P is […]
